As Max Vandenburg draws closer, Death contrasts Liesel’s hardships with Max’s, while life on Himmel Street tightens; the Hubermanns lose the Weingartners as washing clients, leaving Liesel clinging to the mayor’s wife and her books. Liesel and Rudy, increasingly daring, continue thieving with Arthur Berg’s group.

Targeting predictability, Liesel and Rudy watch Otto Sturm’s Friday church run, then pour water to ice the road. Otto crashes, and the pair seize his basket—bread, eggs, and Speck. Troubled but hungry, they deliver the loot to Arthur Berg’s crew, cook it by the Amper, and, at Arthur’s insistence, return the empty basket to Otto’s mailbox.

Days later, during another potato theft, the farmer charges them with an ax. Rudy snags his pants on the fence; Liesel and Arthur wrench him free and they escape. Arthur shouts "Jesse Owens" back at the farmer, easing Rudy’s shame at being last over, and affirming their camaraderie.

Within weeks, Arthur tells them he’s moving to Cologne, gifting Liesel a bag of chestnuts as a parting gesture. Death briefly reveals Arthur’s future: he will cradle his dead sister under a rotting yellow sky, with two stolen apples in his pocket.

Smarter now, Liesel and Rudy eat one chestnut each and sell the rest door to door, earning sixteen pfennig. They "heil Hitler" at Frau Diller’s shop and buy mixed candy, a fleeting triumph beneath the Führer’s framed gaze, foreshadowing darker days ahead.
