Overview
In the raid’s aftermath, Frau Holtzapfel offers her coffee ration and an end to spitting if Liesel reads The Whistler to her twice weekly. Liesel begins the readings and sees that Frau Holtzapfel’s sons are fighting in Russia. The chapter closes by foreshadowing the imminent Jewish march to Dachau.
Summary
After a bombing raid, Molching surveys the damage: no deaths, but two apartment blocks are rubble and a crater scars Rudy Steiner’s favorite Hitler Youth field. With several quiet weeks, routine returns, though tension lingers.
One October day, Frau Holtzapfel knocks with “business.” Rosa Hubermann bristles, but Frau Holtzapfel directs her offer to Liesel Meminger: in exchange for Liesel reading The Whistler aloud at her home, she will stop spitting on the Hubermanns’ door and hand over her coffee ration.
Rosa accepts, setting sessions for Mondays and Fridays, beginning immediately. Liesel reads for forty-five minutes. Frau Holtzapfel pays with a bag of coffee, calls the story good, and resumes cooking. As Liesel leaves, she notices photos of two sons in uniform; Frau Holtzapfel, proud and afraid, says they are in Russia. They exchange “heil Hitler,” and confirm the next day’s reading.
Liesel completes several such visits, counting four sessions. Then a grim shift approaches: Jews are marched through Molching on their way to Dachau. Liesel later reflects that there were two weeks between these readings and that march—two weeks to change the world, and fourteen days to ruin it.
