Chapter 11 - The Town Walker
Overview
Economic strain costs Rosa a client, so Rosa sends Liesel to collect and deliver laundry, hoping a child’s presence will keep customers. Liesel grows familiar with Molching’s households, including the mayor’s silent wife. School turns to letter writing, prompting Liesel to write her birth mother. Overhearing Hans and Rosa’s worried whispers deepens the mystery and dread around her mother’s fate.
Summary
Rosa’s laundry business begins to decline when Ernst Vogel cancels service, citing wartime hardship and suggesting the Hubermanns receive money for fostering Liesel. Rosa vents her humiliation at home, then decides to use Liesel as the public face of the business to discourage further losses.
Rosa instructs Liesel to collect and deliver laundry, return directly with the small payments, and avoid Rudy. On her first solo outing, Liesel breaks Rosa’s rules by swinging the bag once, then resolves to be careful. She finds joy in walking alone and begins to appreciate their customers.
Liesel’s route introduces several households: the approving Pfaffelhürvers; gentle Helena Schmidt; the Weingartners with their cat, Little Goebbels; and the mayor’s wife, Frau Hermann, who wordlessly appears, fragile and alone. Rudy occasionally accompanies Liesel and tries to tempt her to spend laundry money on rumored candy at Frau Diller’s, but Liesel refuses, fearing Rosa.
At school, a letter-writing assignment leads Rudy to pen a teasing note that earns Sister Maria’s intervention; he rewrites it more properly. At home, Liesel rejects trivial letters and asks Hans if she can write to her birth mother. Hans cautiously agrees, suggesting she send it via the foster-agency worker, Frau Heinrich.
Liesel composes a heartfelt letter describing her new life and posts it the next day, then waits. That night, she overhears Hans and Rosa whispering fearfully that Liesel should forget her mother and wondering what “they” might have done to her. Liesel curls into bed, haunted by the implication that her mother may be in danger and by the unanswered question of who “they” are.
