Chapter 24 - The Struggler, Concluded
Overview
Max Vandenburg completes his clandestine journey to Molching and finds Himmel Street. Haunted by fear, guilt, and the danger of capture, he forces himself forward by counting steps. At number thirty-three, he readies a key and prepares to enter, poised on the threshold of potential refuge and risk.
Summary
Death frames the end of juggling and the continuation of struggling, holding Liesel Meminger and Max Vandenburg in narrative hands and promising their convergence. Max, the struggler, pushes on toward survival, convinced that even if he dies tonight, he will die alive.
Traveling from Pasing to Molching, Max enters the town late, aching and wary. Streetlights glow, buildings loom, and everything seems to watch him. He reminds himself to keep his eyes open, knowing children hunt coins while Jews watch for capture.
To manage fear, Max counts footsteps in sets of thirteen. He follows the mental map along Munich Street and, after many sets, reaches the corner of Himmel Street. He carries a suitcase in one hand and Mein Kampf in the other, both slick with sweat and heavy with necessity and disguise.
As he nears his destination, Max suppresses hope and rehearses contingencies if he is caught or if the wrong person awaits inside. Guilt rises as he questions asking others to risk their lives for him, but he continues on.
At number thirty-three, Max faces a pale, sickly house with an iron gate and a spit-stained door. He takes out a dull key, squeezes it until it pierces his skin, rests his cheek against the wood, and prepares to unlock the door, poised between dread and the promise of safety.
