Chapter 40 - The Floating Book (Part II)
Overview
Rudy and Liesel evade Franz Deutscher but run into Viktor Chemmel, who seizes The Whistler and flings it into the river. Rudy wades into freezing water to save the book, savoring a rare victory and asking Liesel for a kiss. She refuses, deepening Rudy’s unrequited longing and foreshadowing future loss.
Summary
In early December, Rudy experiences an unusual victory. After school, Rudy and Liesel stop at Alex Steiner’s shop and head home. Spotting Franz Deutscher ahead, Rudy guides Liesel on a detour along the river to avoid him.
They instead encounter Viktor Chemmel, smoking with other boys on a bridge. Viktor amiably insults them and snatches The Whistler from Liesel, quickly sensing the book’s importance to her. Rudy tries to bargain, insisting the conflict is with him, but Viktor mocks them and demands an impossible price, exposing that Liesel hasn’t finished the book.
Viktor theatrically spins and throws The Whistler into the Amper River, letting it float away as the others laugh. Liesel and Rudy immediately give chase along the bank. Rudy sheds his coat and wades into the numbing water, struggling against the cold until he secures the soggy book.
Holding the rescued book, Rudy lingers in the water to relish a rare triumph and to position himself to ask Liesel for a kiss. He asks; she does not grant it. Rudy hands her The Whistler and walks on, afraid to press further. The narration underscores his deep, unspoken love and foreshadows that he will die without ever receiving her kiss.
