Overview
Dumai makes her ceremonial entry into Antuma Palace, publicly recognized by Emperor Jorodu and introduced to Empress Sipwo and Princess Suzumai. The River Lord and his daughter, Lady Nikeya, probe Dumai’s identity and intent, signaling court opposition. In private, Osipa frames the palace as a battleground and urges Dumai to harden her resolve and strategy for succession.
Summary
Dumai arrives in Antuma in full court regalia, her appearance staged so the city will recognize her before she enters the palace. Emperor Jorodu welcomes her publicly, guiding her into the great hall and the Rainbow Throne’s presence. Dumai meets Empress Sipwo and the shy Princess Suzumai, who gifts her a Noziken hairpiece.
The River Lord of Seiiki arrives early with his daughter, Lady Nikeya, revealing their influence and confidence. He tests Dumai with veiled barbs about her temple upbringing and hints at secrecy around her name; Lady Nikeya pointedly “misremembers” Dumai as Unora to sow doubt. Jorodu intervenes, ending the exchange, but the power lines at court are clear.
Installed in the Rain Pavilion with twelve attendants, including Osipa, Dumai surveys the Floating Gardens and struggles with illness and homesickness. Osipa asserts control over the attendants and privacy, then orders Suzumai’s gift removed and replaced, fearing a trap. She warns that the River Lord will use Suzumai against Dumai and that the palace is a battlefield with Jorodu and the River Lord as opposing generals.
Discussing succession, Osipa urges Dumai to plan to secure the line—either by bearing a child far from Kuposa influence or finding a minor Noziken heir. Though shaken, Dumai rejects retreat to Mount Ipyeda and reaffirms her devotion to Kwiriki, resolving to harden herself and fight for the throne.
