Overview
On her eighteenth birthday, Glorian endures stalled labor amid the siege and gives birth to Princess Sabran, securing the Berethnet line. With Hollow Crag failing, she publicly presents the infant to rally exhausted troops, then orders Wulf to spirit the child to a barrow for safety as she returns to battle.
Wulf and Thrit fight to collapse; Thrit confesses love, and Wulf flees with the heir while Glorian chooses near-certain death to protect her people and legacy.
Summary
At Hollow Crag, Glorian labors through the night as wyverns press the siege. Amid fear and stalled progress, Helisent comforts her, while Marian commands dwindling defenses. Glorian claims her agency, kneeling to deliver with Bourn, Helisent, and Florell’s help, and births Princess Sabran at dawn, the day she turns eighteen.
Holding her daughter, Glorian names her heir and vows love despite the monarchy’s demands. The respite shatters as reports confirm the battle is failing. Accepting the threat to the entrance and the scent of blood, Glorian resolves to act and orders a horse, insisting Sabran comes with her.
Outside on Cenning Moor, Wulf and Thrit fight through exhaustion as reinforcements from Paupers’ Henge falter in daylight. Hollow Crag has been breached repeatedly, and the enemy keeps swelling. Thrit collapses; in a brief, raw exchange, he confesses love and kisses Wulf, who admits his fear but returns to the fight at Thrit’s urging.
Glorian rides onto the field, bloodstained from childbed, and addresses the warriors. She declares Sabran’s birth as proof the Saint’s promise endures and charges them to defend the entrance and the heir. The sight of the newborn reignites morale; soldiers rise, horns sound, and the line steadies in renewed fury.
Wulf rides to Glorian. In a swift decision, Glorian hands him the swaddled Sabran and commands him to cross the river to a princess’s barrow and hide within until safe, foreseeing Fýredel’s pursuit and Hollow Crag’s likely fall. Wulf begs her to flee, but Glorian chooses to fight, claiming her freedom in courage.
After a final blessing for child and friend, Glorian turns her mare back into the fray while Wulf escapes with the screaming heir, and Thrit, sworn to survive, keeps fighting as Cenning Moor burns.
