Overview

Dumai prepares to answer Furtia’s summons, balancing duty to dragonkind against court dangers. After Nikeya threatens her allies, Dumai agrees to take Nikeya while securing Kanifa’s support, who reveals his long-held love. Emperor Jorodu endorses the mission, gifts gauntlets, and orders a diplomatic stop in Mozom Alph. Dumai, Kanifa, and Nikeya depart on Furtia to seek the dark rocks in Sepul.

Summary

At the Rain Pavilion, Dumai writes cautiously to her mother, mindful that the River Lord reads her letters. She readies herself for Furtia’s arrival and reflects that the mysterious dark rocks are more dangerous than the Kuposa. Troubled by a recurring faceless figure in her dreams, she confides in Osipa about leaving and is advised to court Sepuli queen Arkoro as an ally.

Lady Imwo announces Nikeya, who arrives with veiled threats toward Kanifa and Osipa while pressing to accompany Dumai to Sepul. Dumai challenges Nikeya’s resolve and conditions, yet Nikeya persists. Afterward, Dumai urges Osipa to return to Mount Ipyeda for safety; Osipa refuses, asserting her resilience.

Dumai meets Kanifa secretly at the old hatchery and warns him of Nikeya’s recognition and danger. Kanifa insists on joining the journey; when Dumai tries to send him away, he reveals his enduring love and tests her loyalty. Acknowledging she would never abandon him in his place, Dumai agrees to bring him if Furtia allows.

That night, Emperor Jorodu privately supports Dumai’s plan to isolate and spy on Nikeya, gifts fitted gauntlets, and instructs her to stop first at Mozom Alph to reassure Queen Arkoro and warn of the threat. As the River Lord watches, Furtia arrives. Dumai requests passage for Kanifa and Nikeya; Furtia accepts but snaps at Nikeya, asserting dominance.

With an ancient saddle secured, Dumai mounts; Kanifa ties them together for safety. Nikeya, underdressed for the cold, fumbles and briefly falls before gaining a seat. Dumai exchanges a final look with Jorodu and, gripping the horn, lifts off with Kanifa and Nikeya as Furtia bears them into the night toward Sepul.
