Summary
Dumai confronts Unora, demanding the truth of her origins. Unora recounts her upbringing in Afa, her father Saguresi’s rise from commoner to River Lord under the young Emperor Jorodu, and the Kuposa-led backlash that banished Saguresi. Left destitute, Unora later reached court as a supposed butterfly spirit, served the empress, conceived by Jorodu, and fled to Antuma to protect Dumai.
Alone with Dumai, the Grand Empress unveils the long game of Clan Kuposa, tracing their power to Sasofima Kuposa and the bell-casting legacy that enabled centuries of regency control. She details Empress Sipwo Kuposa, the dead princes, and the surviving, pliant heir, Noziken pa Suzumai—evidence of Kuposa plans to keep the throne weak and compliant.
The Grand Empress explains Jorodu’s purpose: Dumai, free of Kuposa allegiance, must claim the Rainbow Throne. To shield her and outmaneuver the clan, Jorodu will govern through a distant shadow court, speaking via Dumai until she gains strength. A Kuposa spy had already sought Dumai, but Jorodu’s agent reached Antuma first.
Crushed by the realization that she must abandon her vocation as Maiden Officiant, Dumai accepts that service to the gods now means ruling. Assured that Kanifa knew nothing, Dumai departs the chamber in tears and seeks comfort in Kanifa’s arms at sunrise, marking the end of her hidden life.
