Overview

Wulf decides to leave the Priory to return to Inys, revealing to Tunuva, Canthe, and Esbar that the Inysh queen is carrying his child. He swears to keep the Priory’s secrets and is granted an ichneumon for swift travel. Tunuva and Esbar choose to hide the news to protect the Priory, then ready their sisters to ride out again.

Summary

Before dawn, Wulf reflects on belonging at the Priory and the truth of his birth, deciding he must return to his Inysh family. He finds Tunuva in the armoury, thanks her, and confesses he must leave despite their newfound bond. They seek Canthe and the Prioress Esbar to formalize his departure.

On the balcony, Wulf requests leave and is reminded of his vow to keep the Priory secret. He reveals that the Queen of Inys is pregnant with his child and asks for transport. After initial shock, Esbar, through Canthe, agrees to lend an unclaimed ichneumon to the Yscali coast, requiring him to continue alone by sea.

Wulf bids quiet farewells, absorbing the Priory’s halls as his birthplace and carving his birthname near his birthfather’s on the men’s memorial, guided by Siyu. He holds Siyu’s daughter, Lukiri, and accepts what he is leaving behind while reaffirming his duty to protect his Inysh family.

Later, Tunuva and Esbar watch Siyu and Lukiri, grappling with Wulf’s departure and the revelation of Tunuva’s unborn grandchild in Inys. Fearing backlash and misuse of mage blood, they decide to keep the pregnancy secret between themselves and Canthe. Esbar resolves to resupply the Priory and ride out to shield remaining survivors, with Tunuva at her side.
