Overview

At the Night Banquet hosted by the River Lord, Dumai participates in a poetry game that hints Lady Nikeya may target Dumai’s guard, Kanifa. After a calculated performance by Nikeya, Emperor Jorodu announces Dumai’s diplomatic flight to Sepul with Furtia and unexpectedly proclaims her Crown Princess, sidelining Suzumai and escalating court tensions.

Summary

In Antuma’s White Peak Hall, Dumai attends the Night Banquet with Emperor Jorodu, Empress Sipwo, and Princess Suzumai, preoccupied by Furtia’s warning about sinister, heat-born rocks and a coming northern search. Jorodu supports Dumai’s journey and his plans for a shadow court, but first they must endure the banquet hosted by the River Lord.

The River Lord pointedly flatters Dumai while implying her role should be to support Suzumai, signaling his opposition to Dumai’s rise. A streamside poetry game begins. Dumai receives veiled verses that suggest the writer is Lady Nikeya and that the “guard by the water” from the mountains—Kanifa—could be targeted. Dumai’s replies betray her fear for Kanifa, confirming the dangerous subtext.

Lady Nikeya then performs “Snow and Sea” with Lord Kordia, arrogating the image of the first dragonrider. Dumai recognizes Nikeya’s calculated display and weighs her duty to depart with Furtia against the risk of leaving Jorodu to face the River Lord’s faction alone.

At the appointments, Jorodu praises Nikeya but pivots to announce Dumai’s imminent flight with Furtia to Sepul to renew alliances. He then shocks the court by declaring that upon her return Dumai will be Crown Princess and his successor, with Suzumai to assist her. The pronouncement freezes the gathering, exposing a new political order and sharpening conflict with the River Lord and Empress Sipwo.
