Overview
Dumai, riding Furtia amid a tempest over Uramyesi, confronts Taugran as the comet’s star‑rain empowers the water‑gods. Seven dragons coil around the wyrm and smother its furnace, killing Taugran but expending their own lives. Washed ashore, Dumai meets Pajati, who offers healing. To prevent future strife, Dumai relinquishes her starlight and chooses to disappear.
Summary
Amid an unending storm over Uramyesi, Dumai rides Furtia in pursuit of Taugran, whose wyrmlings besiege the city with flame. Lightning and wind from allied dragons hold the wyrms from the people as Dumai, wounded by an arrow from the River Lord’s trap, hardens her resolve to protect Seiiki at any cost.
As Kwiriki’s Lantern— the comet—arrives, star‑rain infuses the water‑gods. Furtia reveals their strength is greatest beneath the falling star. Dumai recognizes the light within herself: Unora once swallowed a star so Dumai could be born bearing its remnant. Forgiving her mother, Dumai commits to ending Taugran so it cannot rise again.
Seven dragons coil around Taugran, their starlit bodies searing as they tighten until the furnace within the wyrm is smothered. Taugran dies mid‑flight; the island’s fires gutter out. Furtia and the other dragons fall, and Dumai is cast into the sea, senseless.
Returned by the Abyss to a silent shore, Dumai finds Furtia lifeless and the skies cleared of wyrms. Pajati the White appears, telling Dumai the star’s light could still mend her if she uses all that remains of what Pajati once gave Unora. He warns she can choose only once.
Weighing Antuma’s likely civil war against Seiiki’s survival, and thinking of Nikeya, Dumai decides she should not return. She offers up her inner light—the star within—and slips into darkness, choosing disappearance over revival to spare the East further bloodshed.
