In the frozen western coast of Hróth, the rock stacks called the Six Virtues witness days of wreckage as hundreds of burned and drowned bodies wash onto a black beach beneath Hólrhorn. Among them lies a brown-haired woman, Regny, her face unscathed, and one last survivor: Wulfert Glenn.

Half-drowned and flayed by cold and salt, Wulf crawls to haul Regny farther from the tide, kissing her brow and taking bitter solace that he has brought her home. He considers surrendering to the sea but remembers two duties: to a wise northern elder who survived war and to a young western queen with snow in her blood. He resolves to live and warn them that while the Nameless One cannot return, something else has come.

Two days later, a family of Bálva herders, fleeing plague, finds the beach strewn with four hundred and thirteen corpses and Wulf still breathing. Using Regny’s horn, Wulf gives a faint call that draws their elkhound, Hampa, and the family rushes to aid him with furs and water.

When the herders try to move Regny, Wulf refuses to release her, and an elderly man, speaking Hróthi, stays their hands and questions Wulf. Mustering his strength, Wulf delivers his message: they must tell Einlek Óthling, and that the king is dead.
