Overview
Connor tells Pip that his brother Jamie vanished after the memorial, and police deem him low risk due to past disappearances. Connor begs Pip to investigate with her podcast, but she refuses, citing past trauma and danger. Instead, Pip decides to approach DI Hawkins to push an active police response.
Summary
Connor arrives at Pip’s house and reveals Jamie has been missing since the memorial. Pip recalls briefly seeing Jamie around 8–8:15 p.m., noting his focused, off demeanor. Connor explains repeated calls go to voicemail and that neither friends nor hospitals have any information.
Connor describes filing a missing persons report with Officer Daniel da Silva, but police labeled Jamie low risk because he is an adult with prior disappearances. He adds that Jamie has recently been jumpy and short-tempered, unlike his usual laid-back self, and that this absence feels different.
Connor asks Pip to investigate and use her podcast audience to find Jamie. Pip refuses, citing the danger and fallout from her previous case—injury, her dog’s death, threats to her family, and harm to friends—and says she cannot do that again.
Though she declines the investigation, Pip agrees to help by leveraging her standing with the police. She promises to speak directly with DI Hawkins to argue for a higher risk assessment and an active search, then drives Connor home on her way to the station.
