Chapter Sixteen: Lily

Overview

Lily gets an unexpected child-free morning and reconnects with Atlas, only to learn that the boy who vandalized Bib’s is Atlas’s newly discovered half brother, Josh. Atlas is already considering how to protect Josh from their mother, raising the stakes from a restaurant problem to a possible custody crisis.

The chapter also deepens Lily’s awareness of how permanently Ryle’s presence affects her life, even as her emotional bond with Atlas grows stronger. Atlas’s grateful text confirms that Lily has become a source of stability for him while both of them navigate complicated family responsibilities.

Summary

Lily reflects on how motherhood has changed her mornings. Weekdays revolve around Emerson’s needs before Lily can think about herself, so Lily treasures quiet Sundays in bed with her daughter. Lily considers sending Ryle a photo of Emerson, as she often does to include him in their daughter’s life, but Lily holds back because she is still angry and shaken by Ryle’s behavior the previous night.

Lily thinks through the burden of co-parenting after divorce. Because Emerson ties Lily to Ryle forever, Lily feels trapped by the constant need to consider Ryle’s feelings, jealousy, and reactions. Lily questions how long she must wait before dating again, especially if her relationship with Atlas becomes real.

Lily’s mother calls and asks to take Emerson to the botanical gardens with Rob. Lily agrees, secretly hoping to use the unexpected free time to see Atlas. When Lily’s mother and Rob arrive, Lily’s mother fusses over Emerson’s clothes, and Rob quietly warns Lily to park in the same spot if she leaves so her mother will not suspect anything.

After they leave, Lily sees that Atlas has called and returns the call by video. Atlas is in an unfamiliar kitchen, explains that he moved closer to the restaurant, and shows a large breakfast spread with two plates. Lily briefly fears he is with someone else, but Atlas reveals that the other person is Josh, the younger brother Atlas only learned about the night before.

Atlas moves to a private room and tells Lily that Josh is the person who vandalized his restaurants. Josh believed Atlas knew about him and abandoned him, so Josh acted out in anger. Atlas explains that his mother had been trying to reach him about Josh, and he now feels guilty for blocking her, though Lily reassures him that he did not know.

Atlas says he has not told his mother that he found Josh yet, but a lawyer friend advised him to do it soon. Atlas wants custody because he knows his mother is harmful and believes Josh’s father, Tim, would be worse, but Atlas worries he might not be capable of raising Josh well. Lily reassures Atlas that no parent feels fully prepared, and after the call Atlas texts that Lily is his comfort and beacon; Lily replies that Josh is lucky to have him and agrees Atlas should have kissed her.
