Chapter Five: Atlas
Overview
Atlas learns that the vandalism has spread from Bib’s to Corrigan’s and discovers through security footage that the culprit appears to be a young, possibly homeless person who slept outside the restaurant after damaging it. The discovery complicates Atlas’s anger with empathy because it echoes his own past.
His past intrudes even more directly when his mother, Sutton, unexpectedly calls, apparently out of need rather than remorse. Atlas blocks her, but the contact leaves him rattled and reinforces how much he fears losing the life he has built.
Summary
Atlas arrives at Corrigan’s after Bib’s was vandalized two nights earlier and learns the damage has followed him to his newest restaurant. Brad points out that the attack is clearly targeted: two windows are damaged, and the back door has been spray-painted with an insult using Atlas’s name.
Atlas checks the security footage, hoping it will identify the culprit before he has to involve the police. The video shows a young-looking person in a black hoodie arriving after one in the morning, searching the dumpster, testing the back door, spray-painting the message, and trying unsuccessfully to break the triple-paned windows.
The footage then reveals that the vandal curled up on the back steps and slept there for more than two hours in the cold before leaving casually at sunrise. Because the image is too grainy to identify the person, Atlas emails himself the file but doubts the police could use it. The sight shifts Atlas’s anger into pity because it reminds him of the cold nights he spent homeless before Lily helped him.
While Atlas is still unsettled, an unknown number calls. Atlas answers because he hopes it might somehow be Lily, but the caller identifies herself as Sutton, his mother. Her sudden contact shocks him because she had rejected him years earlier.
Atlas quickly realizes Sutton is not calling to apologize and likely wants something from him. When Sutton confirms she is not dying and makes a vague comment about needing money, Atlas hangs up and blocks her number. The call leaves Atlas shaken because his past now feels as if it is forcing its way into the stable life he has built.
Atlas tries to bury the reaction and joins Brad outside to help with repairs. After several silent minutes, Atlas deflects by telling Brad that Brad’s son Theo needs a phone, and Brad jokes that Atlas needs a therapist closer to his own age.
