Chapter Seven: Atlas

Overview

Atlas’s lunch visit to Lily remains on his mind, and Atlas decides to call Lily that night to ask for a date, signaling a more direct approach to their relationship. In the restaurant kitchen, Theo quietly reveals that Theo likes a boy, and Atlas responds with care, reassurance, and confidentiality. The chapter deepens Atlas’s role as a steady, protective figure while showing Atlas trying to be bolder with Lily.

Summary

At Atlas’s restaurant, Atlas tries to teach Theo how to prepare flounder, but Theo is disgusted by scaling the fish and jokes that he would rather remain Atlas’s therapist than work with food. Theo asks whether Atlas texted Lily, and Atlas explains that he did, then brought Lily lunch because her reply was brief and Atlas wanted Lily to know where Atlas stood.

Theo teases Atlas about the romantic, beach-themed thing Atlas previously said to Lily. When Atlas jokes that Theo has probably never spoken to a girl, Theo grows awkward and quiet. Atlas notices the shift and asks whether Theo likes someone, then carefully corrects himself by adding, “Or he,” giving Theo space to be honest.

Theo’s reaction confirms Atlas’s suspicion, and Theo admits that the boy he likes is in math club with him. Atlas asks whether Theo’s father knows, and Theo says no. Atlas reassures Theo that Theo’s father is a good person and one of Atlas’s best friends, implying that Theo would have support if Theo chose to tell him.

Seeing Theo’s discomfort, Atlas changes the tone by joking that Theo will never date anyone because Theo is the only twelve-year-old without a cell phone. Theo relaxes and returns to teasing Atlas about Lily. Atlas says he plans to call Lily that night and ask Lily on a date.

When Theo looks worried about what Theo has revealed, Atlas promises not to say anything to Theo’s father, framing it as mutual client confidentiality. Relieved, Theo resumes mocking Atlas’s romantic lines until Theo’s father’s shift ends and Theo leaves the kitchen.
