Chapter Twenty-One: Atlas
Overview
Atlas processes his rage over the scars Ryle left on Lily and chooses tenderness as his answer, deepening the emotional and physical renewal between Atlas and Lily. After leaving Lucy’s wedding early, Atlas and Lily return to Lily’s apartment, where playful intimacy and rare child-free privacy move their relationship forward.
The chapter marks a shift from cautious reconnection to more open desire, while Atlas’s call with Josh and Theo also shows Atlas balancing romance with his new responsibilities at home.
Summary
Atlas is overwhelmed by anger after seeing Lily’s heart tattoo and the faded bite-mark scars left by Ryle. The sight reinforces Atlas’s belief that Lily deserves tenderness and safety, and Atlas resolves to help replace the painful association around the tattoo with loving ones.
Atlas and Lily continue kissing in her apartment before leaving for Lucy’s wedding. Although Atlas knows they need to go, Atlas struggles to pull away because the moment feels like something Atlas has been waiting for since adolescence.
At the wedding and reception, Atlas cannot focus on the ceremony or guests because Atlas is consumed by the renewed closeness with Lily. Lily also wants to be alone with Atlas, and when the reception proves crowded, Lily suggests leaving early; Atlas agrees, and they slip out after less than an hour.
Back at Lily’s apartment complex, Atlas offers Lily a piggyback ride because Lily’s painful shoes are difficult to refasten. The playful gesture makes Lily laugh, and once they are inside her apartment, Lily immediately resumes kissing Atlas.
Lily asks when Atlas needs to be home, and Atlas calls Josh to say Atlas may be late. During the video call, Josh and Theo are playing games; Theo teases Atlas about being at Lily’s and jokes about Atlas finally kissing her, embarrassing Atlas before Atlas ends the call.
Lily is amused to learn that Theo, a twelve-year-old, knows about their relationship. After joking that Theo is Atlas’s therapist, Atlas and Lily kiss again. Lily admits it feels strange to have free time without her child and invites Atlas to take advantage of the rare privacy, leading Atlas to follow Lily toward the bedroom.
