Chapter Twenty-Two: Lily
Overview
Lily and Atlas try to navigate their first private intimate moment as adults, and Lily’s nerves reveal how vulnerable Lily feels after pregnancy, divorce, and years away from Atlas. Atlas’s patience and reassurance turn embarrassment into trust, allowing Lily to feel safe rather than judged.
The chapter marks a major emotional and physical reconnection between Lily and Atlas. Their renewed intimacy confirms that their relationship is moving beyond cautious dating into a deeper sense of belonging and commitment.
Summary
Lily enters her bedroom with Atlas but immediately loses confidence because it has been a long time since she has been intimate with anyone, especially since having Emerson. Atlas notices Lily’s uncertainty and gently lowers the pressure by suggesting they talk, which helps Lily feel less rushed.
Lily goes into the closet to change, but the light is out, and Lily gets stuck when her dress tangles in her hair. Atlas helps free Lily from the dress, and the awkwardness shifts into mutual desire. Lily and Atlas begin kissing in the closet, recalling the intensity and tenderness of their teenage relationship.
Lily asks Atlas to take her to the bed, and Atlas does, but Atlas remains patient and careful because Lily had asked to take things slowly. Although both Lily and Atlas clearly want more, Atlas stops before sex because Atlas does not want their first time together again to be rushed before he has to leave.
Atlas and Lily continue being intimate without fully having sex, but Lily becomes embarrassed when she realizes breast milk has leaked onto her bra and Atlas’s shirt. Atlas gives Lily privacy while Lily pumps, showers, and changes, then reassures Lily in the living room that nothing about the moment was wrong or embarrassing.
Atlas’s reassurance helps Lily relax, and their closeness on the couch quickly reignites their desire. They undress, use protection, and finally have sex again, which Lily experiences as deeply emotional and affirming. Lily feels certain that being loved by Atlas is where Lily belongs.
