Chapter Thirty-Three: Atlas

Overview

Atlas meets Sutton at Bib’s and shifts from wanting to cut her out to offering her a limited chance to be present in Josh’s life. Atlas demands legal custody while proposing weekly family dinners, making clear that Josh deserves stability without being forced to lose his mother completely.

The chapter deepens Atlas’s role as Josh’s protector and shows Atlas breaking a cycle of neglect with firmness and compassion. Josh’s family tree, with only Josh and Atlas, confirms how fully Josh has begun to see Atlas as his family.

Summary

After dropping Josh at home, Atlas asks Sutton to meet him at Bib’s. Atlas arrives early and cooks coconut shrimp, remembering that Sutton once loved the dish during the single good day trip Atlas shared with her as a child in Cape Cod.

When Sutton arrives, Atlas tries to keep the meeting calm, but Sutton immediately assumes Atlas wants to apologize or give Josh back. Atlas questions Sutton about Atlas’s childhood favorites and Josh’s interests, exposing how little Sutton knows about either son. Sutton defends herself by saying survival as a single mother left no room for such things.

Atlas explains that Josh’s relationship with Sutton is not Josh’s responsibility. Atlas then tells Sutton he wants legal custody of Josh and will take Sutton to court if necessary, but Atlas does not want Sutton to vanish from Josh’s life. Instead, Atlas proposes weekly Tuesday family dinners at Bib’s so Sutton can begin showing interest in Josh.

Sutton is shaken by Atlas’s offer and by Atlas’s acknowledgment that her life as a single mother must have been difficult. Atlas thanks Sutton simply for showing up, and Sutton nearly cries but holds back. Sutton agrees to ask about the Tuesday dinner time and accepts a to-go box of the coconut shrimp, confirming it has always been her favorite dish.

Atlas returns home emotionally exhausted and finds Josh asleep on the couch with anime paused on the television. Atlas covers Josh with a blanket, then notices Josh has completed his homework, including a family tree showing a small seedling with two branches labeled Josh and Atlas.
