Chapter Thirty-Seven: Atlas

Overview

On Atlas and Lily’s wedding day, Atlas prepares for the ceremony while Theo teases him about his vows and Josh’s teenage behavior briefly pulls Atlas into brotherly concern. Atlas rereads vows that frame his and Lily’s love as a hard-won second chance, accepting both risk and gratitude after their past heartbreak.

The chapter marks the culmination of Atlas and Lily’s reunion, shifting their story from survival and rebuilding into an intentional commitment to face the future together. Atlas’s final joking addition keeps the moment intimate and playful despite the emotional weight of the vows.

Summary

On Atlas and Lily’s wedding day, Atlas stands in front of a mirror adjusting his tie while Theo teases him and demands to preview the vows. Atlas refuses, insisting the vows are good, while Theo jokes that Atlas might embarrass himself with a bad rhyme.

When someone announces that the ceremony will begin in five minutes, Atlas asks where Josh is. Theo claims Josh was last seen kissing a girl in the gazebo, prompting Atlas to worry in a protective, older-brother way about Josh being fifteen and growing more confident and independent.

Left briefly alone, Atlas rereads his vows. The vows reflect on why public promises exist, the fragility of human commitment, and the risk that love can end. Atlas reframes that risk as something miraculous, because the teenage version of Atlas would have considered even a chance at loving Lily a gift.

Atlas’s vows acknowledge that Atlas and Lily first loved each other as teenagers, lost each other, suffered heartbreak, and then found a second chance. Atlas promises to cherish whatever time Atlas is given with Lily, whether their future brings lifelong happiness or hardship, and ends by affirming that Lily has always been Atlas’s favorite person.

Josh returns with Darin, Brad, Theo, and Marshall, and Marshall tells Atlas it is time. Before leaving for the ceremony, Atlas adds one final playful postscript to the vows, borrowing Theo’s joke: “It is my wish for you to be my fish.”
