Chapter Twenty-Nine: Atlas
Overview
Atlas and Lily’s peaceful morning together is interrupted when Sutton arrives demanding that Josh return to her. The confrontation exposes Josh’s deeper longing to live with his father, not simply with Atlas, which wounds Atlas and complicates Atlas’s attempt to protect Josh.
Sutton’s threats and mockery show that the custody conflict is escalating, while Atlas’s reaction reveals how emotionally invested Atlas has become in both Lily and Josh. The chapter shifts Atlas from romantic certainty with Lily into a painful family crisis.
Summary
After spending the night with Lily, Atlas reflects on how deeply his feelings for her have grown. Atlas no longer wants distance or caution, even though Atlas understands why Lily and Atlas need to move slowly. While Lily gets ready to leave, Lily notices Atlas has a spare toothbrush, and Atlas privately remembers that Atlas had kept a small set of emergency items for Lily for years, hoping Lily might someday need or return to Atlas.
Atlas tries to extend the morning by offering to make Lily breakfast. Before Atlas can begin, the doorbell rings, and Atlas opens the door expecting Josh but instead finds Sutton, Atlas and Josh’s mother. Sutton says a caseworker visited her and claims no investigation will be opened, then demands that Atlas return Josh or face charges.
Atlas keeps his voice calm and tells Sutton that Josh is not home and does not want to live with Sutton. Sutton insists Josh has no choice and accuses Atlas of interfering out of revenge. Atlas asks whether Sutton honestly misses Josh or is only trying to prove a point.
Brad arrives with Josh before Atlas can prevent it. Josh freezes when Josh sees Sutton, but Atlas gestures for Josh to come inside. Sutton follows Josh into the house, where Josh refuses to go with Sutton and looks to Atlas for support. Atlas tells Josh that Josh can stay, despite Sutton’s threats to have Atlas arrested.
Josh breaks down and yells that no one is listening to what Josh wants: to live with Josh’s father, whom Josh wants help finding. Josh storms to his room, leaving Atlas wounded by the realization that Josh may not see Atlas’s home as the place Josh truly wants to be. Sutton mocks Atlas for thinking Atlas had formed a bond with Josh, tells Atlas to take Josh to Josh’s father, and leaves.
Lily locks the door after Sutton goes. Lily tries to comfort Atlas, but Atlas is overwhelmed by the confrontation and Josh’s words, so Atlas pulls away and says Atlas needs a minute.
