Emerson’s first birthday party is held at Allysa’s house with family present, including Lily, Ryle, Allysa, Marshall, Lily’s mother, and Ryle’s parents. Ryle arrives in time for presents and cake, takes photos, and prepares to leave, but he and Lily spend most of the party silently avoiding each other while pretending things are fine.

When Atlas learns Emmy is staying overnight with Allysa and Josh is staying with Theo, Atlas leaves work early and invites Lily to his house.

At Atlas’s home, Lily notices small signs of ordinary disorder and feels comforted by his realness. Atlas gives Lily his security code, and their flirtation quickly leads to a private, intimate night together. Afterward, Lily and Atlas talk quietly about Ryle, and Lily says she may ask Allysa to mediate a conversation with Ryle because Lily will no longer bend her life around his anger.

Atlas tells Lily he wants everyday life with her and hates pretending they do not already know they are building a future together.
