Chapter Twenty-Eight: Lily
Overview
At Emmy’s birthday party, Lily maintains boundaries with Ryle and refuses to discuss legal matters privately or during the celebration. Allysa’s support gives Lily and Atlas a rare child-free night, allowing their relationship to deepen emotionally and physically.
Lily sees Atlas in his professional world and later in his home, reinforcing her trust in him and her desire for a shared future. By the end of the chapter, Lily resolves to stop organizing her happiness around Ryle’s reactions and to pursue a life built on safety, loyalty, and mutual love.
Summary
Emerson’s first birthday party is held at Allysa’s house with family present, including Lily, Ryle, Allysa, Marshall, Lily’s mother, and Ryle’s parents. Ryle arrives in time for presents and cake, takes photos, and prepares to leave, but he and Lily spend most of the party silently avoiding each other while pretending things are fine.
When Ryle finds Lily alone, he asks what Lily’s lawyer said. Lily refuses to discuss legal or custody matters at the birthday party and decides internally that Ryle has lost the privilege of private conversations because Lily no longer feels safe alone with him. Lily tells Ryle she will text him, then walks away.
Allysa pulls Lily aside and asks whether things with Ryle are off. Lily realizes she can honestly say she is okay, unlike in the past when she hid her pain. Allysa then asks about Atlas, and when Lily admits they have had little time together, Allysa offers to keep Emerson overnight so Lily can see him.
Lily surprises Atlas at Corrigan’s, where he is managing a busy kitchen with calm authority. Lily watches Atlas work and sees that he is respected rather than feared. Darin greets Lily and reveals Atlas may promote him to head chef because Atlas wants more time away from the restaurants, a fact that makes Lily happy. When Atlas learns Emmy is staying overnight with Allysa and Josh is staying with Theo, Atlas leaves work early and invites Lily to his house.
At Atlas’s home, Lily notices small signs of ordinary disorder and feels comforted by his realness. Atlas gives Lily his security code, and their flirtation quickly leads to a private, intimate night together. Afterward, Lily and Atlas talk quietly about Ryle, and Lily says she may ask Allysa to mediate a conversation with Ryle because Lily will no longer bend her life around his anger.
Atlas tells Lily he wants everyday life with her and hates pretending they do not already know they are building a future together. Lily agrees they have already begun that future, and they playfully discuss timelines for moving in together and marriage. The chapter ends with Lily feeling secure in her commitment to Atlas and confident in choosing people who support her happiness.
