Chapter Three: Atlas
Overview
Atlas processes his reunion with Lily by seeking advice from Theo, whose blunt teasing pushes Atlas to stop overthinking and reach out. Atlas’s decision to text Lily marks a small but meaningful shift: he refuses to repeat the passivity and self-doubt that separated them before.
Lily’s brief reply confirms that there is still a connection, but it also signals caution, keeping the future between them uncertain.
Summary
Atlas sits in his office with Theo, Brad’s twelve-year-old son, and describes his brief encounter with Lily earlier that day. Theo teases Atlas for quoting Finding Nemo and worries that Lily has not texted after eight hours, but Atlas explains that the quote connects to their past.
Theo questions the details of the meeting and becomes encouraged when Atlas says Lily has his phone number memorized. Atlas considers that Lily may have memorized the number as an emergency lifeline from their past rather than a romantic sign, which makes Atlas uncertain about whether to contact Lily first.
Brad interrupts to take Theo home, joking that he does not understand why Atlas seeks advice from his son. Theo insists Atlas asked for help with girls, then leaves Atlas with simple advice: text Lily.
Alone, Atlas debates whether texting will pressure Lily or whether silence will repeat his earlier mistakes. Remembering how often he kept Lily at a distance because he thought his life was not good enough for her, Atlas decides he will not let another chance pass without effort.
Atlas texts Lily, saying it was good to see her. Lily replies, “You too.” Atlas waits for more, but no further message comes, leaving him disappointed and aware that her brief response carries hesitation.
