Chapter Six: Lily

Overview

Atlas visits Lily at work with lunch, forcing Lily to confront both her desire for him and her fear of Ryle’s reaction. When Ryle unexpectedly arrives, Lily hides Atlas in a closet, making clear how much Ryle’s jealousy still controls her choices even after divorce.

Atlas responds with patience rather than anger and encourages Lily not to let Ryle’s feelings dictate her future. The chapter moves Lily and Atlas closer while exposing the practical and emotional complications of pursuing a relationship with Ryle still tied to Lily through Emerson.

Summary

At Lily’s flower shop, Allysa asks whether Lily has planned Emerson’s first birthday. Lily wants something small, while Allysa offers to host a bigger party. Their conversation shifts to dinner plans, and Lily notes that she deliberately visits Allysa and Marshall on nights when Ryle is on call because Ryle still seems to hope for reconciliation.

Atlas unexpectedly arrives at the shop with lunch for Lily, calling it his “why are you avoiding me pasta.” Lily admits she has been avoiding Atlas, not because she wants him to leave, but because she is overwhelmed by her feelings for him and afraid Ryle could interfere. Atlas gently touches Lily’s hand and asks if he can call her that night.

Before Lily can answer, Allysa rushes in to warn that Ryle is arriving. Panicked, Lily hides Atlas in her office supply closet because she fears Ryle’s reaction to seeing him. Ryle comes in to pick up keys for Marshall, becomes mildly suspicious when he smells Atlas’s pasta, and Allysa badly improvises a lie about having cooked it. Ryle leaves without discovering Atlas.

After confirming Ryle is gone, Lily opens the closet, but Atlas pulls Lily inside with him and calmly resumes the interrupted question about calling her. Lily warns that her life is complicated because Ryle will always be Emerson’s father. Atlas argues that Ryle is no longer Lily’s husband and should not stop Lily from pursuing what could be the second-best thing in her life, after Emerson.

Atlas leaves Lily alone in the closet after Lily says he can call whenever. Allysa finds Lily and confronts her about hiding Atlas, then presses Lily for details about whether she and Atlas are dating. Lily insists nothing has happened yet, but Allysa recognizes the significance of Atlas bringing lunch and seems torn, likely because Lily moving on from Ryle is emotionally difficult for her.
