Chapter Nineteen: Atlas

Overview

Atlas brings Josh to Bib’s after school, integrating him into both Atlas’s work life and a more stable routine. Josh unexpectedly knows Theo from school, giving Atlas a new way to understand how Josh behaves around other kids.

Josh begins making amends for vandalizing the restaurant by washing dishes, while Theo’s description of Josh as a “bully to the bullies” complicates Atlas’s view of his brother. The chapter also keeps Atlas’s relationship with Lily moving forward as Atlas prepares to attend a wedding with her.

Summary

Atlas has Josh dropped off at Bib’s after school because Atlas does not want to leave Josh alone at home. Josh arrives looking transformed: properly dressed, newly groomed, and carrying schoolbooks instead of spray paint. Atlas brings Josh inside, where Josh reflects that he had slept in the restaurant for two weeks but had never entered through the front door.

In Atlas’s office, Josh and Theo immediately recognize each other from Josh’s new school. Josh casually tells Theo that Atlas is his brother, which surprises Theo because Atlas has never mentioned having a brother. Atlas cannot explain the full story while the kitchen is busy, so Atlas leaves the boys together.

After the kitchen settles, Atlas returns and finds Josh and Theo absorbed in a manga discussion. Atlas sends Josh to help Brad in the kitchen as a consequence for the damage Josh caused to the restaurant. Brad, quickly understanding the situation, assigns Josh to wash dishes, while Atlas decides an hour of work will be enough to acknowledge the debt.

With Josh out of the office, Atlas asks Theo what Josh is like at school. Theo explains that Josh is not exactly nice, but not cruel to nice people either; Theo describes Josh as someone who bullies the bullies. This reassures Atlas somewhat because Theo does not seem afraid of Josh, though Atlas is still unsure how to understand Josh’s behavior.

The conversation shifts back to Lily when Theo asks whether Atlas has kissed her yet. Atlas says they have been busy but that he is attending a wedding with Lily the next day. Theo teases Atlas for being slow and advises him not to say anything cheesy if he wants the kiss to happen.
