Chapter Twenty-Five: Atlas
Overview
Lily brings Emerson to Atlas’s house after Ryle discovers her renewed relationship with Atlas and frightens her with another aggressive confrontation. Atlas becomes a safe refuge for Lily and Emmy while also beginning to grasp the legal and emotional complexity of Lily’s custody situation.
The chapter strengthens Atlas and Lily’s commitment when Lily says they are together, but it also raises the stakes: Ryle’s anger may become a custody threat, and Lily’s past choice not to report his abuse limits her protection now.
Summary
Atlas begins the morning with Josh, who has not finished his homework after Theo’s sleepover. Josh explains that a school ancestry assignment is difficult because he does not know much about his relatives, and Atlas admits he knows almost nothing about Sutton’s family or Josh’s father’s side. When Josh asks whether Atlas has tried to find his father, Atlas avoids mentioning Tim’s unanswered voicemail but agrees to help Josh search.
Lily texts asking to call, then asks to come to Atlas’s house with Emerson because she does not want to go home. Atlas worries that Ryle may have hurt Lily, and when Lily arrives, she breaks down crying in Atlas’s arms. Lily tells Atlas that Ryle discovered their relationship, became angry, pushed her against the door, and frightened her, though he left before the situation escalated further.
Atlas welcomes Lily and Emerson inside, reassuring Lily that she and her daughter can stay as long as needed. Josh briefly assumes Emerson might be Atlas’s child and his niece, but accepts the correction and returns to his homework. Atlas helps Lily settle Emerson, then listens as Lily explains her fear that Ryle might come looking for Emmy, prompting Atlas to suggest Lily should reconsider unsupervised visits and possibly take Ryle back to court.
After several hours, Josh plays with Emerson, and Atlas reflects on how significant it feels to spend time with Lily’s daughter. Atlas imagines that Emerson could one day be his stepdaughter, while also recognizing that Lily moving on may threaten Ryle’s sense of control. Atlas worries Ryle may retaliate through custody conflict, especially because Ryle has not been reported for abuse, pays child support, and appears legally stable.
Atlas asks Lily about reports, custody, and child support, and Lily explains that she has full custody with flexible visitation but never reported Ryle’s past abuse. Lily tells Atlas they are together now, making their relationship explicit, and Atlas feels newly happy and invested. However, their conversation returns to custody risks, and Lily admits lawyers once advised her that a civil agreement was her best option because Ryle had no criminal record and access to strong legal support.
Atlas promises Lily she is no longer alone, but Lily eventually decides to leave because she feels guilty bringing Emmy around Atlas without Ryle knowing. Atlas reminds Lily that she came because she needed a safe place from Ryle’s temper. Atlas helps them to the car, kisses Lily goodbye, and reflects that finally being with Lily makes every separation feel painful.
