Chapter Thirteen: Atlas

Overview

Atlas's hopeful night with Lily turns into a destabilizing confrontation when Atlas's estranged mother appears at Bib's. Atlas learns that Atlas has an eleven-year-old brother named Josh, who has been missing for two weeks, and Atlas connects Josh to the vandalism at Atlas's restaurants.

The revelation reframes Atlas's family history and gives the vandalism a painful personal motive rather than making it a random attack. At the same time, Lily reaches out after her own difficult night, and Atlas chooses tenderness with Lily despite being shaken by the discovery.

Summary

After dropping Lily off, Atlas reflects that he would have kissed her if Darin had not texted to say Atlas's mother was waiting at Bib's. Atlas has not told Lily about his mother's attempts to contact him, so he keeps the message to himself, drives around for half an hour, and finally returns to the restaurant through the back entrance so Atlas can control the confrontation.

Darin confirms Atlas's mother is still waiting at table eight and offers to send her away, but Atlas decides she will not stop until Atlas speaks with her. Expecting that Atlas's mother may want money, Atlas takes cash from the office safe before sitting across from her. Their conversation is immediately tense: Atlas refuses small talk, and Atlas's mother says she is not there for money.

Atlas's mother reveals she is looking for Josh, Atlas's eleven-year-old little brother, who has run away and has been missing for about two weeks. Atlas is shocked because Atlas never knew he had a brother, and Atlas corrects his mother's claim that Atlas ran away by reminding her that she kicked him out. Atlas learns Josh is Tim's son, Tim left years ago, and Atlas's mother has been back in Boston for about ten years.

Atlas grows angrier when Atlas's mother admits she has not reported Josh missing and seems more worried about possible truancy charges than Josh's safety. When Atlas asks where they live, Atlas's mother says they were staying at the Risemore Inn but she can no longer afford it. Atlas gives Atlas's mother money and tells her to return to the hotel in case Josh comes back.

After leaving Atlas's mother in the restaurant, Atlas steps into the alley and realizes Josh may be the person vandalizing Atlas's restaurants, especially because the misspelling reminded Atlas of his mother and Josh could have found Atlas online. Lily then FaceTimes Atlas, and Atlas sees Lily has been crying. Though both of their nights have turned painful, Atlas offers to drive to Lily's home just to give Lily a hug, and Lily sends Atlas her address.
