Chapter 36

Overview

During Thinking Skills Group, Charly and fellow patients struggle with a Taboo exercise that exposes their cognitive deficits. Dr. Vincent pushes to discuss Charly’s shooting, but Amy redirects to avoid retraumatization. Charly recalls a dream fragment: a male voice saying, “You deserve this,” spoken by a man just out of her visual range on the left.

The episode deepens the mystery of the shooter while highlighting Charly’s lingering memory and perceptual limits.

Summary

Four and a half months after the shooting, Charly attends Thinking Skills Group where Amy leads a game of Taboo. Charly draws “clown,” misunderstands the rules, and uses all the forbidden cue words. The slip underscores her ongoing cognitive challenges, prompting Amy to move the turn along.

Helga struggles next, accidentally saying a taboo word herself. The game’s difficulty frustrates the group, and Dr. Vincent pivots to his preoccupation: figuring out who shot Charly. Amy refuses to discuss it to protect Charly, but Charly admits she wants answers too.

Pressed by Dr. Vincent, Charly shares more of her recurring dream: she is in her old apartment’s living room, hears a familiar male voice say, “You deserve this,” and senses the man standing to her left—just out of the range where she can easily see. Helga suggests changing the dream to make him move; Angela jokes darkly about asking him not to shoot.

Amy reins the group back to the exercise, but Charly silently pushes for more memory. As the session closes, Charly worries that the part of her brain holding the critical detail—the shooter’s identity—may be gone for good.
