Chapter 14

Two and a half months into rehab, Charlotte begins her first Walking Group session in a small gym with parallel bars. She joins a semicircle of wheelchair users, recognizing an older deaf woman and Jamie, who calls her “Helmet Girl.” Therapists Natalie and Steve lead the group.

As a benchmark, an elderly man tries first with a walker but leans dangerously forward until Natalie stops him. Jamie goes next; although he can stand and move his limbs, his gait is wildly unsteady, and both therapists strain to prevent a fall before returning him to his chair.

Charlotte takes her turn at the parallel bars. Despite gripping the bar and trying to follow instructions, she pitches forward and leans left. Natalie calls Steve for help, and together they can only keep Charlotte upright; she cannot take a step. The effort leaves the therapists sweating and concerned.

Natalie voices doubt that Charlotte is ready for the group, which threatens Charlotte’s hope of progress. After discussion, Natalie and Steve allow her to continue for a few days to assess improvement. Jamie, despite earlier provocation, offers no taunt as Charlotte is wheeled back to the semicircle.
