Chapter 54
Overview
Charly tests her new prism glasses and experiences a striking improvement in left-side use. Clark arrives, belittles her wish for better frames, and exerts financial control. When Clark misbuttons her shirt, Charly unconsciously fixes it with her left hand, shocking Valerie, who recognizes real neurological progress and relief.
Summary
Five and a half months post-injury, Charly wears new prism glasses that dramatically aid her left neglect, despite their unflattering look. She feels genuine optimism about their effect.
Clark arrives distracted and patronizing, dismissing Charly’s wish to buy nicer frames as a waste and invoking his control over her finances. He accepts praise from staff for improving at transfers and dressing but leaves Charly with a misbuttoned shirt, refusing to correct it.
Determined not to remain disheveled, Charly starts fixing the buttons herself. Valerie rushes in and realizes Charly is using her left hand spontaneously—an ability previously impaired. Charly credits the prism lenses; Valerie, surprised yet relieved, acknowledges the breakthrough and its significance for Charly’s recovery.
