Chapter 51

Charly notes that since Clark reappeared, Jamie has withdrawn, no longer sharing hallway meals or much conversation. Seated together in Walking Group by a nurse, they cautiously talk; Jamie confirms Sam visited and that he is not reconciling with Karen, despite coparenting.

Jamie demonstrates major progress by walking with minimal assistance. Clark arrives early, insists Charly skip Walking Group to focus on what he deems “important,” and dismisses her prospects of walking at home. Charly pleads for one walk. As Jamie returns to his chair, he pointedly shoves Clark, sending him stumbling to the floor.

Clark erupts, accusing Jamie of doing it on purpose; Jamie claims he lost balance while implying Clark mistreats Charly. Natalie intervenes, warns Clark, and ultimately ejects him from the group for threats. After Clark leaves, Natalie confronts Jamie, who argues Clark deserved it; she reminds him violence isn’t acceptable and asks Charly if she wanted defending.

Charly tells Jamie she didn’t want the confrontation, aware she must face Clark’s anger later. Jamie apologizes, admitting it’s hard to watch. Natalie then gets Charly up for her turn, and Charly crosses the gym, fearing this could be the last walk of her life.
