Overview
Two and a half months into rehab, Charlotte struggles through a memory and attention group led by Amy, revealing persistent left neglect and reading difficulties. Summary
Two and a half months after the injury, Charlotte attends a small rehab group led by Amy, playing a beach-ball Q&A game to practice memory and orientation. Her left neglect and reading issues hinder her performance; Amy uses a red pen cue to guide her to read from the left. A talkative older male patient derails discussion with movie references.
Mid-session, a handsome man appears at the door and insists on staying. Charlotte realizes he is her husband, Clark, though his presence distracts her and worsens her participation. After group, Amy asks Clark to wheel Charlotte back; he awkwardly bumps the doorway and seems nervous.
Clark apologizes for not visiting, asks if Charlotte recognizes him, and she recalls his name. He compliments her appearance but then notes her face is “a little lopsided,” implying post-stroke asymmetry. Checking his watch, he cuts the visit short and, instead of kissing her, pats her helmet and leaves.
Left in the hall, Charlotte feels confused and disappointed by Clark’s brief, detached visit.
