Chapter 23

Overview

Four months into rehab, Charly feels left behind in Walking Group until shared vulnerability and encouragement from Jamie and Angela shift her mindset. Jamie reveals his son and backstory, underscoring his urgency to recover. Buoyed by group support, Charly attempts a hemi-walker and crosses the room, marking real progress.

Summary

At four months post-injury, Charly enters Walking Group demoralized, believing everyone else is advancing to walkers while she remains stuck at the parallel bars. She watches Jamie struggle, supported closely by Steve, and senses his frustration mirrors her own.

After his turn, Jamie confides that progress feels insufficient because he needs to care for his six-year-old son, Sam, currently with Jamie’s parents. He admits he can’t bear for Sam to see him like this. Charly asks about his injury; Jamie explains he fell down stairs at his bar, remembers nothing from the day or weeks after, and therefore cannot sue since he co-owns the bar with his brother, Brad. Angela teases Jamie about dating and free drinks, lightening the mood.

Natalie invites Charly to try a hemi-walker. Terrified by her left neglect and instability, Charly initially refuses, convinced she will fall and that progress is impossible. Angela and Jamie encourage her; soon the whole room chants her name, shifting Charly from resignation to cautious resolve.

With Natalie stabilizing her and Steve guiding her left leg, Charly grips the hemi-walker and takes steps. Step by step, she traverses the room. The group applauds, Jamie cheers, and Charly recognizes an unexpected breakthrough—real, measurable progress after weeks of feeling stuck.
