Chapter 42

Overview

On a warm spring day, Charly ventures to the hospital porch with her mother and reunites with Jamie, his father, and Jamie’s son, Sam. Jamie agrees to trial visitation with Karen under drug testing, acknowledging he needs help. Charly unexpectedly excels at throwing during a game of catch, boosting morale and hinting at functional recovery amid lingering deficits.

Summary

Five months after, on the first warm day of spring, Charly’s mother convinces Charly to leave the unit for the hospital porch after Clark departs. Charly hesitates, fearing being seen and frustrated by veering left in her wheelchair, but agrees and is reassured the porch is hidden from the street.

Outside, Charly finds Jamie with his father and energetic son, Sam. Jamie calmly mentions Sam’s earlier visit with Karen, then privately explains he’s allowing Karen a trial of visitation with random drug testing, aiming for shared custody because he needs help.

Sam asks to play catch. Jamie’s throws consistently miss due to his deficits, and Charly worries whether Jamie can keep up with Sam’s energy. When challenged, Charly takes the ball; despite poor depth perception for catching, she throws accurately, surprising everyone. Her mother notes Charly’s athletic history in softball.

They spend nearly an hour playing, with Charly reliably throwing to Sam. The lighthearted game becomes Charly’s most enjoyable time in years, signaling a morale lift and a glimpse of retained abilities amid ongoing limitations.
