Summary
Two and a half months after the injury, Charlotte explains she has been designated a “Hallway Parker,” meaning she must remain in her wheelchair in the corridor where staff can constantly monitor her after her recent fall. She spends lunchtime at the busy intersection near the nurses’ station, watching staff chatter, visitors, and old movies.
Charlotte notes a small but meaningful milestone: her diet advances from purees to soft foods like cheese or tuna sandwiches, and she is finally allowed water, which she craves. The hallway’s elderly patients depress her, and she jokes internally about placing them on her neglected left side to avoid seeing them.
She notices a younger man beside her, later identified as Jamie, struggling to feed himself due to poor motor control. When Jamie catches her watching, he snaps, calling her “Helmet Girl,” and Charlotte looks away but keeps observing.
Jamie opens a cream cheese container and, instead of eating, smears it across his face with surprising coordination. Nurse Betty discovers the mess, and Jamie blames “Helmet Girl” before joking the container is in his butt, then reveals it from his wheelchair seat.
