Chapter 8
Overview
One year and nine months before the shooting, Charlotte struggles with a knee injury that derails marathon plans. She encounters Clark while running; he proposes a wagered race for a date. Charlotte outpaces him but chooses to encourage him and lets him win, effectively agreeing to go out with him.
Summary
Charlotte reflects on her failed marathon plans due to persistent lateral right knee pain, diagnosed as an iliotibial band issue. Frustrated by the limited medical advice, she still attempts a run near her office, listening to Fleetwood Mac.
Clark Douglas appears on the path and reminds Charlotte of her three-month deferral to consider a date. Charlotte deems dating him inappropriate, but Clark proposes a race: if he wins a lap, he gets a date; if he loses, he leaves her alone. Charlotte counters with twenty laps to leverage her endurance.
They start running. Clark leads early but tires by lap eight, while Charlotte feels unexpectedly strong. Despite being able to dominate, Charlotte hangs back to keep Clark within sight, revealing ambivalence between competitive drive and budding interest.
When Clark stops around lap nineteen, Charlotte returns, encourages him to finish, and runs the final lap beside him. She deliberately lets him cross first, tacitly accepting the date and marking the beginning of their relationship despite her knee concerns.
