Chapter 10
Overview
Charlotte declines a former patient’s dinner invitation on ethical grounds, then faces a public threat from an abusive husband blaming her for his wife’s newfound independence. Clark intervenes, diffusing the situation and apologizing for their failed date. Noticing his infected cat scratch, Charlotte prescribes antibiotics, and they agree to try dating again.
Summary
One year and nine months before the shooting, Charlotte begins clinic with a follow-up from Stanley Leroy, a past fungal infection patient. He thanks her, shares his self-improvement, and asks her to dinner. Charlotte refuses due to ethics and her recent bad experience with Clark, but she second-guesses the decision and heads to the waiting room to reconsider.
Before Charlotte can find Stanley, Mr. Barry confronts her, blaming her psoriasis treatments for empowering his wife Regina to leave him. He threatens to make Charlotte pay, frightening her. The waiting room watches as tension escalates.
Clark Douglas steps in, warns Mr. Barry that his accusations are baseless and potentially slanderous, and suggests the police if the threat is physical. Intimidated, Mr. Barry leaves when escorted by receptionist Margo. Shaken, Charlotte sits with Clark while she calms down.
Clark explains he came to apologize for his behavior on their failed date. Charlotte notices his cat scratches have become infected. She insists on antibiotics and offers a prescription. Clark asks if this makes her his doctor again and suggests a second chance at a date. Charlotte agrees.
