Overview
Clark seethes over the gym incident, asserts control, and pressures Charly to transfer power of attorney to him if she’s deemed competent. Fearing a nursing home, Charly acquiesces. Later, Jamie apologizes, affirms her worth, and quietly cares for her, hinting at his impending discharge and deepening Charly’s conflict.
Summary
Five and a half months after the shooting, Clark arrives still angry about the gym altercation. During bathing instruction with Valerie, Clark is rough and then confronts Charly, demanding she avoid Jamie and questioning her ties to him. He escalates by objecting to Charly’s mother holding power of attorney, insisting he should control the finances.
Clark claims Dr. Greenberg said a neuropsych evaluation could deem Charly competent to transfer power of attorney. Weighing her fear of being consigned to a nursing home against her distrust of Clark and his girlfriend living in her home, Charly reluctantly agrees.
Later, left hungry and especially thirsty after dinner in the hallway, Charly cannot get help. Jamie approaches, walking independently with a cane, and apologizes for causing trouble earlier. He gently takes Charly’s hand, admits he understands her choosing her husband, and confides that he thinks she is the most beautiful woman he has ever met, urging she not be with a man who doesn’t see that.
Instead of kissing her, Jamie notices her untouched items, spins her tray, and reveals the hidden water, which Charly gratefully drinks. Jamie departs, his improved mobility implying he may soon be discharged, leaving Charly warmed by his care yet bracing for his absence and her deepening dependence on Clark’s terms.
