Summary
Five months after the injury, Charly, increasingly fatigued and prone to naps, wakes after breakfast to whispers in her dark room. She recognizes Clark on the phone discussing her constant sleeping, dreading something but calling it worth it, and ending with “I love you,” clearly not directed at her.
Confronting Clark, Charly accuses him of cheating with Haley. Clark debates denial, then admits the affair, claiming their marriage wasn’t good and he fell in love with Haley. Charly feels gut-punched, realizing Clark is no savior.
Clark then proposes a “mutually beneficial” arrangement: he will continue helping her while using her disability payments to address his debts. He frames it as honest pragmatism, promising to act devoted in public.
