Chapter 56
Overview
Clark corners Charly at night, coercing her to sign power of attorney. He drunkenly confesses Kyle’s involvement, his affair with Haley, and that he delayed calling 911 after the shooting until a neighbor forced his hand. Clark then tries to suffocate Charly, but Jamie intervenes; staff subdue Jamie as Charly reports Clark’s attempt.
Summary
Late at night, Clark enters Charly’s room, demands she sign power of attorney, and berates her. His insults trigger Charly’s recovered memory of the shooting: after finding her bleeding, Clark refused to call 911 and told her, “You deserve this,” intending to wait for her to die.
Pressed by Charly naming Regina Barry, Clark admits Kyle Barry was his friend, that Kyle suggested targeting Charly, and that Clark married her for money while secretly continuing his relationship with Haley. He says Kyle used Clark’s unsecured gun and planned a staged burglary, and Clark only called 911 because a neighbor returning Charly’s stray cat saw the scene.
Clark insists no one will believe Charly and pushes her to sign. When she refuses, he grips a pillow and advances, implying he will smother her and frame it as a medical decline. Charly, terrified and in severe pain, searches for help.
Jamie arrives, and at Charly’s request stays. Confrontation escalates: Jamie warns Clark off with his metal cane. As Clark tries to leave, Jamie pins him, demands to know what he planned with the pillow, and punches Clark, bloodying his nose.
Nurse Grace and two orderlies intervene; Jamie is sedated despite shouting that Clark tried to suffocate Charly. In tears, Charly tells Grace that her husband tried to kill her.
