Summary
At dawn to nightfall, Leto and Siona lie in dune shadows while he teaches heat survival and Fremen history. He sings “Liet’s March,” presses her to interpret it, and links desert life to inescapable past and messages carved by nature. Siona remains flippant, leaving her stillsuit flap open, ignoring danger.
At dusk they scan for silhouettes and Leto explains the thrown-sand gesture of peace. Siona strides off angrily but instinctively follows the Pointers. Leto trails, counting on emergent loyalty to a travel companion and measuring her brittleness against his breeding plans should she fail the test.
Through the night they cross dunes to pebble flats. Leto withholds a signal device to teach necessity over possessions. Siona challenges his control of Atreides matings; he bluntly confirms it, redirecting her to her thirst. As moons set, fatigue and dehydration mount while Leto monitors his own chemical adaptations accelerating his metamorphosis.
At morning boulders, Siona, exhausted and chilled, hears Leto’s inner “fire.” He offers a warm hammock-like arc of his first segment; she accepts and sleeps. Leto resists pity, recognizes her likely mortality if she does not learn, and reflects that as he becomes more worm, human concerns paradoxically grow stronger, complicating harsh decisions.
