Chapter 50

Nayla, bound to obey Siona, prepares an ambush at the bridge to Tuono. As the cortege approaches, with Moneo leading and Leto and Hwi within the sealed cart, Siona’s Fish Speakers dance to draw the cart forward. On Siona’s silent cue, Nayla fires her lasgun, severing cables and plasteel; the bridge tilts and collapses.

Moneo clings briefly to a cable and witnesses Hwi fall from the open cart before he himself plunges to his death. The lasgun pierces the cart’s suspensors, and Leto spills into the river. In the torrent, the sandtrout skin bursts away in glittering fragments. Swept to a sandbar near the ruins of Sietch Tabr, Leto painfully crawls into a shallow cave.

Nayla, Siona, and Duncan descend by rope. Duncan, enraged that Hwi was killed, seizes Nayla’s lasgun and burns her to death. Siona disarms him and they confront the ravaged Leto. Leto rebukes Siona’s callousness and compels her to touch him, then speaks of love, reality, and his purposes while his body continues to slough and change.

Leto instructs Duncan to let people scatter, promises Duncan the Fish Speakers’ loyalty, and tells them of spice at Sietch Tabr. He reveals his gift: Siona’s line is invisible to prescience, creating ever-diverging futures—the Golden Path. As his outer mass falls away, Leto affirms he was born a man but will not die a man. He warns not to fear the Ixians; they cannot bring arafel, then falls silent and dies.

Siona claims a new Atreides identity and resolves to lead alongside Duncan, noting weather instability and planning to consult the journals. Duncan hesitates but contemplates command, while Siona intends to win his allegiance and love. In a later summation, Hadi Benotto argues against censoring Leto’s journals, asserting their central role in understanding the Scattering, the Church’s myths, and the “pearls of awareness,” and insisting that the descendants of Siona and Duncan remain beyond prophetic reach.
