Chapter 46

The chapter opens with an epigraph from The Stolen Journals in which Leto II frames himself as both leader and outsider, claiming he shaped a barbaric culture and removed people’s right to participate in history, thereby generating spiritual tension.

In Tuono, Duncan Idaho broods in quarters that mock Fremen austerity while Siona obsessively reads translated volumes of Leto’s journals stolen from the Citadel. Idaho’s jealousy over Hwi simmers. An aide, Teishar, arrives and excitedly announces that Leto will come to Tuono to be wed in the ancient Fremen way, as guests of Tuono.

After Teishar leaves, Siona reads passages from the journals about expedience and Leto’s manufactured spiritual tension. She reveals that Ix provided the translation after the Guild found a Key. Idaho challenges Siona’s leadership over the D‑wolf disaster, pressing that they should have tested poisons earlier; Siona admits they only learned poison worked after losses.

They debate Leto’s motives and the Golden Path. Idaho pushes toward action: inventorying their meager tools and proposing they try to destroy Leto’s cart, possibly with Nayla’s lasgun. Siona distrusts Nayla despite Nayla’s compulsion to obey; Idaho coldly says to ask Nayla—and kill her if she refuses.

They consider Leto’s likely approach: a peregrination along the Royal Road and a suspensor drop into Tuono. The scene closes with reflections on Garun’s longing to be truly Fremen. Idaho recalls a Fremen maxim about choosing companions you would die with; Siona notes Garun’s respect for Idaho, hinting at shifting alliances as Leto’s arrival nears.
