Chapter 30

Night falls on Onn as explosions erupt near the Ixian Embassy. Leto, feeling rare fury at the threat to Hwi Noree, orders the Fish Speakers to destroy Face Dancers before moderating the command. A second blast triggers chaos; a third drives Leto to the surface where he hurls himself into the fray, his worm-body lashing through attackers as lasguns flare. Fish Speakers finish the survivors, but many innocents die across the city.

Reeling from water-agony, Leto returns to a cleansing chamber and learns Hwi is safe but slightly wounded. Reviewing the attack’s pattern, he concludes a single guiding mind is behind it and identifies Malky. He orders that Anteac on Ix locate Malky for capture or execution and dispatches instructions to Nayla: reveal her Fish Speaker status to Siona, swear obedience, and foster private time between Siona and Duncan Idaho.

Leto then consults the plaza bashar, Nyshae (Iylyo). She reports stolen lasguns and homemade explosives, and he directs relief for survivors and narrative control blaming the Tleilaxu. He promotes Kieuemo to sub-bashar, rewards Nyshae, and notes the dangerous dependency formed by Fish Speakers witnessing his killing.

Hwi arrives, limping but calm. Leto urges her to reconsider their betrothal, admitting he loves her but cannot be a man to her. Hwi chooses to stay. He vows she will never leave his household, warns that public faith must be managed through silence rather than lies, and foretells posthumous hatred of him mitigated by the eventual discovery of his journals.

Leto cautions that Hwi is dangerously saintlike, explains the Golden Path’s aim to foster future saints and endurance, and refuses any attempt by Hwi to persuade Siona. He frames Siona as bred to rule, prone to aristocratic backward looking, and emphasizes the peril of righteous certainty. Concluding, Leto plans a plaza performance by surviving Face Dancers to distract the city, after which he will announce his and Hwi’s betrothal.
