Chapter 11

Leto reflects on why his Fish Speakers are women and how their shared rites shape loyalty. He then arranges a controlled first interview with the new Duncan Idaho in a dark crypt chamber, beginning in darkness so Duncan can hear Leto before seeing his transformed body.

Duncan arrives anxious and combative, recounting Tleilaxu awakening methods and asking about prior Duncans. Leto confirms the long span of his metamorphosis and his Atreides continuity, then floods the room with light, revealing the pre-worm body. He invokes Atreides honor to defer deeper explanations.

Leto offers Duncan command of the elite Guard drawn from the Fish Speakers. Duncan questions relying on a female army and the theocratic aura around Leto. Leto argues women’s behavioral advantages, the pacifying uses of sex, and the necessity of “Leto’s Peace,” acknowledging it as enforced tranquility and warning of the dangers of centralized power in worse hands.

Pressed on limits, Leto asks Duncan to guard him “by whatever means necessary” and to protect the secret of his vulnerability. They test each other’s moral boundaries; Duncan vows to turn if Leto proves worse than Harkonnens, while Leto frames his rule as labor to “give birth” to a transformed Empire.

When Leto channels voices of Paul and Jessica, Duncan recognizes the weight of ancestral memories. At the decision point, Duncan affirms his old Atreides loyalty, accepts command of the Guard, and implicitly accepts Leto’s aims. Moneo then escorts Duncan away, sparing the moved Leto from further strain.
