Overview
Moneo summons Duncan Idaho and Hwi Noree, apologizes for humiliating Duncan, and reveals his own past rebellion and Leto’s devastating “test.” He delivers Leto’s decree that Hwi and Duncan must separate. Duncan erupts and flees; Hwi accepts the separation. On his way out, Duncan meets Nayla, who declares she is no longer “Friend,” deepening his isolation.
Summary
Late in the day, a Fish Speaker summons Duncan Idaho to Moneo’s workroom. Demoralized by being thrown earlier, Duncan goes anyway, drawn by his bond to Hwi Noree. He finds Hwi already with Moneo in the spare, cluttered room. Moneo opens by apologizing for the morning’s humiliation and admits he made Duncan feel inadequate.
Moneo then redirects to the larger crisis: Siona remains in Leto’s deadly testing. Prompted by Hwi and Duncan, Moneo reveals that Leto once “tested” him, transforming him from rebel to devoted servant. He recounts Leto’s claims of embodying his ancestors and being the visible portion of godhood, and the moment he was forced to glimpse the horror that drove Leto’s choice. The experience broke his rebellion and fixed his duty.
Moneo conveys Leto’s decree: Hwi and Duncan must separate and never meet again. Hwi’s hand trembles, and although both resist emotionally, she asserts that private desires cannot prevail. They discuss prayer, Leto’s view of it as coercion, and the limits of his mortality. Idaho mocks; Moneo counters that Leto is responsible for what he has done to himself.
As tensions rise, Duncan derides Leto as worse than the Baron Harkonnen. Moneo rebukes Duncan’s hysteria and poor leadership, affirming Atreides responsibility over manipulation. He describes the moment Leto forced him to see the future’s horror, which nearly killed him. Hwi says she understands through touch. Overwhelmed and furious, Duncan bolts from the room.
On his way back, guards silently pity him. Duncan meets Nayla, who passes and states she is no longer “Friend,” unsettling him further. Alone in his quarters, Duncan recognizes that his outburst will help free Hwi from loving him, and he reflects on Moneo’s shaping by duty and on his own loss of anchoring ties.
