Overview
Duncan Idaho begins his command, haunted by a nightmare, and receives a candid briefing from Moneo. Moneo explains Leto’s rationale for an all-female army, the breeding program that includes Duncan’s genes, and Leto’s rejection of Tleilaxu methods. Duncan grapples with being used for breeding and learns Leto prizes chance and calls his religion a “holy obscenity.”
Summary
Duncan Idaho wakes from a violent nightmare of Fish Speakers as fanged attackers. Settling into luxurious quarters in the north tower, he questions Leto’s use of women and rejects sexual overtures from the Guard. Moneo arrives to brief him on duties and the altered civilization surrounding the God Emperor.
Over breakfast, Moneo recounts the last Duncan’s death in a rebellion but withholds details as unhelpful. At Duncan’s insistence, Moneo explains Leto’s theory: all-male armies, deprived of external enemies, turn on civilians, preserve adolescent loyalties, sublimate into pain-causing behaviors, and can become rapist when restraints fail. By contrast, women mature more readily, especially through pregnancy, making them steadier soldiers.
The discussion turns personal. Moneo reveals he is Atreides by Leto’s breeding program and that some prior Duncans were used as studs; Fish Speakers take no precautions against pregnancy. Duncan is angered by being treated as breeding stock, and Moneo contrasts this with the Tleilaxu’s artificial methods and sterile Face Dancers.
Confronted with Leto’s vast ancestral memories, Duncan questions the God Emperor’s honesty. Moneo affirms belief in Leto, repeating Leto’s claim to have created a “holy obscenity,” and suggests Leto’s true faith is in chance rather than design. Duncan ends torn between resentment and reluctant respect for Atreides daring and Leto’s unsettling vision.
