Chapter 41
Overview
Leto drives Siona to the brink of death on the erg, then offers spice-laced moisture that triggers a devastating ancestral vision and convinces her of the Golden Path. She realizes Leto cannot see her presciently. A sudden rainstorm agonizes Leto, exposing his vulnerability to water and the sandtrout-sandworm paradox.
Summary
Crossing the erg, Siona wastes water by failing to seal her mask and nears death. Leto answers her desperate questions with candor, refusing bargains for rescue while outlining desire, data, and doubt as the basis of agreement. He explains his journals, the danger of unthinking machines, and why he needs an independent Atreides to command the Fish Speakers.
When Siona asks for salvation, Leto offers not a deal but a choice: the Atreides test. She teases moisture from the curled flaps of his cowl and drinks spice-heavy drops, triggering a violent ancestral vision of inescapable hunter machines. She trembles on the edge of death, then finally sleeps and wakes changed, sensing the Golden Path’s cruel necessity.
Confronting Leto, Siona accuses him of preventable deaths and learns he reads emotion like signs in sand. Leto’s prescience flashes with omens—Anteac’s death-shout, Fish Speakers swarming, and the return of Malky. Siona then realizes a crucial truth: Leto cannot follow her tracks; her line must be preserved for this trait.
A sudden downpour strikes. Water sears Leto, producing blue smoke and wracking pain as sandtrout instincts and sandworm death-terror clash, forcing him to crawl to higher, drier ground. He explains the sandtrout-sandworm relationship and why water is lethal. Siona notes his vulnerability, rededicates her rebellion, and Leto resolves to teach by nonviolence despite the risk to his Golden Path.
