Pressed to predict events, Leto rebukes Moneo, urging him to accept an open, changing sky and to take charge of his own existence. He accuses Moneo of dreading the “imperialism of consciousness,” then abruptly orders Hwi to be brought to him, alarming the household and drawing Fish Speakers and courtiers into tense watchfulness.

Hwi emerges in a new, decorated gown and addresses Leto softly, diffusing his anger. Their exchange reveals mutual affection and the public optics of their impending union, even as Leto warns that decoration can precede sacrifice. Hwi’s touch triggers Leto’s physical sensitivity to moisture, emphasizing his bodily vulnerability.
